My Grandmother's cousin was Paul Hunter, chief officer on the Empire Patrol at the time. Paul spoke to me only once of this terrible day when with tears in his eyes he recounted having to throw people into the sea to escape the acrid smoke. He received an MBE for his actions that day, but his pride in this honour was greatly marred by the terrible loss of life and that he had not been able to save more people. Reading your excellent website and seeing how so many of the survivors rebuilt their lives I am sure would have restored some of his pride.

My father, Henry Raikes. passed away 5 years ago, and my mother last year. On going through some papers, I came upon a letter written to my mother (then girlfriend) where he describes very movingly the rescue efforts. He was a coder on HMS Mermaid at the time. He also describes what it was like for a wholly male compliment to have to look after young children with no English. Shame I didn't find this web site when he was still alive, but having said that, he never really spoke about the war, though I do know he found it traumatic, so reading the letter, was the first I knew about it, and his involvement.

My father Norman Ellis was an aircraft electrician on board HMS Trouncer at the time of this incident. One thing he mentioned was that the large amount of camp-cots on board and utilized in making the hanger into a barracks/hospital, normally would not have been there. The ship was being utilized to transport additional supplies needed elsewhere. A fortunate hapenstance.

Hi There,
I was wondering if any one could help, I was going through some papers of my late farther and came across a paper clipping regarding the Empire Patrol, me and my farther were estranged for many year but In his later life we remembered him telling us a story about the Empire Patrol, my farther served on board HMS Mermaid, this is a long shot but I'am trying to put some things together about my late farther, he told me and my wife about this disaster and that he saw a baby in the water and that he jumped in to rescue the baby but was told off for doing so. as i mentioned this is a long shot but it would be great if somebody, as remembered. as it mentions in the guestbook people never forget.

regards Ron

My Father-In-Law's(Peter Paul Panigiris,God rest his soul) sisters were on the boat, who one of them (Despina Mavrou, nee Panigiris) to this day lives with her family on Castellorizo. The other sister (Elizabeth Fountas nee Panigiris) lives in Adelaide South Australia. Thea Elisabeth left her 6 week old baby on the burning boat, as she gave up on trying to get through the flames and black smoke. In seeing this, her sister Despina immersed herself in water and went back to look for the baby, She found him (a boy named Paul who lives in South Australia with his own family) and put him in the front part of her dress lifting it up and clenching it with her teeth to form a pouch. they were saved, and I've heard this story many times in my 30 year marriage to my husband George Peter Panigiris. I find listening eagerly everytime that story is told (being from Cazzie descent myself, my grandparents were Eleutherios Amigdalos and Despina Karpathio), with sadness for the lives lost, but with admiration for such a strong woman as Thea Despo.

Very interesting website.

My grandfather, Mervyn Llewellyn Mather, served as Chief Engineer on MV Empire Patrol in the period before the disastrous passage.

Good wishes.

Special thanks for all the effort that has been made to document this tragic event in Kastellorizo's history.

My late aunty Chrysanthi (Agapito)Fermanis perished in this tragedy at the tender age of appx 5 years old.
My mother and her living and deceased siblings have endured this heartache their whole life and it has had a profound effect on all of them especially their late Mother Eipivi who was forever depressed until she also passed away in her early 50's.
Sincere thanks on behalf of the Late Agapito & Eipivi Fermanis and their respective families

Dear Dr Paul Boyatzis, Allan Cresswell, Nicholas Pappas - Congratulations to you all and all your team for providing such historical data. My grandmother and great great mother were on board and perished. I always wanted to know what really had happened and you have provided me with all the links to my family. My father Paraskos Exintari was in tears today reading rhia. It was a beautiful father days present for him to remember his mum and his family. Thank you so much for providing a photo of my grandmother. I will copy and try to get it reconstructed in some way. Thank you once again.

This is such a moving story. I have just come back from Kastellorizo and found it so beautiful. I can feel for those who come home and found their homeland not as they left it. For the 33 who died words can not express my sorrow.
Congratulations for such a great book.

(7) Congratulations Allan and thank you for keeping alive the memory of the Empire Patrol.

The story is one that most Kastellorizians will remember by word of mouth from family members who experienced the disaster. With your impeccable website, new generations of Kastellorizians will perpetuate the memory.

As a survivor of the disaster, our Mum (Glikeria Stavrou nee Athanasiou) God rest her bless├ęd soul, would have been impressed and proud to know that the story lives on.

The website is a treasure and your work is very much appreciated.
